[American_Idol_Extra] Sing Along Sunday For Pride Month: "I Am What I Am" from "La Cage Aux Folles"

Sing Along Sunday For Pride Month

"I Am What I Am" from "La Cage Aux Folles"

Happy Pride Month to you and yours!
Get out and celebrate!

La Cage aux Folles is a musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. Based on the 1973 French play by Jean Poiret and subsequent 1978 French-Italian screen version (one of the most popular foreign films ever released in the United States), the musical focuses on a gay couple: Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his star attraction—and the adventures that ensue when Georges' son brings home his fiancĂ©e's ultra-conservative parents to meet them.

The musical's 1983 Broadway production overcame competition from several strong new shows that season, including Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park with George, Kander and Ebb's The Rink and David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr.'s Baby, winning six Tony Awards out of nine nominations, including the top honors of Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. Among the forward-looking themes of the musical is the idea that gays can form stable, long-term relationships and raise children.

A gay-themed project was risky in the early years of the AIDS epidemic, even though many Broadway performers, crew members, and devotees were gay. But the creative team—all gay men—felt that such a show was the tonic needed by those suffering from the illness and to combat the overt homophobia that had surfaced in some quarters due to the threat posed by the epidemic.

Although La Cage was Broadway's first gay-themed musical, it was nevertheless a mainstream production. Laurents did not allow his lead characters so much as a peck on the cheek for fear that he might offend his audience. It was an old-fashioned production in the best sense: elaborate costumes by veteran Theoni V. Aldredge, exquisite sets, glamorous chorus girls (including mostly boys in drag), and a lushly romantic score. According to theatre historian John Kenrick, La Cage and the strong 1983 season was the last great Broadway season. After the next season's Big River, for "the first time since Oklahoma, a full decade would go by before a new American musical would pass the 1,000 performance mark."

"I Am What I Am" is a song originally featured on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles (1983–1987). The song is found on the finale number of the play's first act, and performed by the character of Albin Mougeotte. The song was composed in 1983 by Jerry Herman, an openly gay man.

Gloria Gaynor Version

The song was later re-recorded and released as a single by gay icon and disco diva Gloria Gaynor in 1983, and proved to be one of the singer's best known hits among her fans. While pretty much unknown to the mainstream American public (it reached a peak position of #82 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart), Gaynor's version of "I Am What I Am" was a hit elsewhere, reaching no.13 in the UK charts, and would become the rallying cry of the Gay Pride movement, alongside another song of hers, "I Will Survive" (1979).

The Lyrics and Chords:

I Am What I Am

[La Cage Aux Folles]

I am what I am, I am my own special creation
So come take a look, give me the hook or the ovation
It's my world that I want to have a little pride in
My world and it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a damn 'til you can say, hey world

I bang my own drum, some think it's noise I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each feather and each spangle
Why not try to see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham 'til you can shout out loud
I am what I am

There's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet

Even though the whole psychodrama about dreamy "Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's ambiguous sexuality was mostly a false issue inflamed by an evil consortium of craven media outlets — because, really, who else cares if he's gay? — the husky singer did his part to further the speculation by not addressing the issue head-on.

That coy routine is apparently about to end. The New York Post is quoting a "well-placed source" at Rolling Stone magazine saying that Lambert is not only openly gay, but that he will be on next week's RS cover confirming as such.

"He didn't want it to be an issue during the contest, but he's fine with his sexuality," the Post said it was told. In the past, when asked about it, Lambert has only said, "Keep speculating." A rep for Rolling Stone said, "We don't comment on future covers." Lambert has steadfastly refused to talk about his sexuality despite photos of him on his Web site tongue-kissing men and dressed in full drag.

"Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi probably spoke for most observers when she said Friday on "The View," essentially, "Duh."

"I don't think that Adam was ever in" the closet, she told the talk ladies. "I think he was always openly out."

Neither Rolling Stone nor Lambert's rep confirmed the cover news when called by the Post.

In related news: Lambert says he has no hard feelings after "American Idol" Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken bashed him, then apologized over a series

of blog posts last week. The comments were decidedly in the underminer category, however.

"I don't know Clay," Adam told Access Hollywood." "I'm glad he's getting headlines now though, because he wasn't before. ... If he wants to ride my coattails about it, good for him." Zing!

Re: [American_Idol_Extra] The Many Looks of Adam Lambert

In the video they showed of Adam singing at his high-school graduation, he appeared to have light brown hair.  Apart from him being pretty young at the time, he did look very handsome with what I assume must be his natural color.

The black I guess works with his image, but the light brown looked hot too.

[Fox_American_Idol] Was Amercian Idol rigged? Did Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert?

Entry for May 27, 2009 magnify
Was Amercian Idol rigged? Did Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert?

Was American Idol rigged?
But did Kris Allen really win all those votes? Over 100 million were cast, which Ryan Seacrest said was a record on the show, but according to the vote tally, 38 million of those votes came from Arkansas, which is Kris Allen's home state.

Wednesday night's American Idol finale featured host Ryan Seacrest announcing -- and an auditing firm representative confirming -- that "just under 100 million" votes were cast nationwide, which would mean that Allen's home state somehow managed to cast an astounding 38% of the finale's nationwide vote total.

Source: realitytvworld.com

Arkansas has a population of 2.67 million people, so in order to vote 38 million times, that would mean that each man, woman, and child, would have had to have voted an average of 13 times each.

So a state, that has less than one percent of the overall population, cast 38 percent of the total votes?

Kris Allen told reporters:

"I felt shocked almost every week that I made it," he told reporters. "To be the American Idol, I'm completely shocked."

Source: in.reuters.com

However, according to Fox16, who first reported the 38 million number:

"We can't confirm how many votes were cast in Arkansas, and we can't comment on the number of votes for any contestant."

Source: seacoastonline.com

According to 'Dial Idol', this is the map of who voted for Kris Allen and who voted for Adam Lambert.

According to that info, New Hampshire – my state – had 600-odd busy signals on each of Adam Lambert's three lines, getting through on each line a little over 300 times. For Kris Allen, people hit busy signals in the 400-range on each line and got through in the 200-range.

According to the same map, Arkansas got busy signals in the 6,000 range on each of Kris Allen's three lines, getting through in the 3,000 range on each line. (Only about 600 votes total seemed to go to Adam from the three lines.)

Source: seacoastonline.com

So were only Kris Allen fans power texting then? From the general reaction today it seemed like Adam Lambert had more support, but votes don't lie I suppose.

Update: May 26th 2009

AT&T may have had an influence in Kris Allen winning so many votes as well.

AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of "American Idol," might have influenced the outcome of this year's competition by providing free text-messaging services

[American_Idol_Extra] Did Kara DioGuardi out Adam Lambert?

Did Kara DioGuardi out Adam Lambert?

'I think he was always openly out,' the judge told the ladies of 'The View'

Caissie Levy and Adam Lambert pose backstage at the hit revival of 'Hair' on Broadway at The Al Hirshfeld Theater on May 26, 2009 in New York City. Caissie Levy and Adam Lambert co-starred the musical 'Wicked' together

Kara DioGuardi told the ladies of "The View" she knew the truth about "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's sexual orientation.

According to ABC News, Barbara Walters asked the newest "Idol" judge if she felt Lambert's perceived sexuality had an impact on "Idol" voters.

"Well, first of all, I hope not … because we should be judging on talent and viability in the music industry and they both had that," DioGuardi replied.

"I don't think that Adam was ever in (the closet)," she added. "I think he was always openly out."

Walters reportedly pressed DioGuardi about her comment that Lambert "was always openly out."

"I think he was," DioGuardi answered. "I mean, from what I've seen … I do. I never thought he wasn't."

But Lambert has deflected comments about his sexuality since the competition ended. In an interview with People earlier this week, the raven-haired rocker said inquisitive minds should "calm down" and "keep speculating."

More from Access Hollywood

"It's a really, really cool thing … to be able to show people that you can be yourself, and you should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what you're about, and never make apologies for it," Lambert told the mag.

Adam Lambert says role models come in a variety of different forms — even in eye makeup, fingernail polish and tight pants.

"It's a really, really cool thing," the "American Idol" runner-up says, "to be able to show people that you can be yourself, and you should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what you're about, and never make apologies for it."

So to those who speculate about his sexuality, he has a message. "Calm down," he says, and "keep speculating."

Lambert, 27, who finished second to Kris Allen in the show that ended May 20, says his comfort with himself can serve as an example. "It feels really amazing to be able to try and pass that on to kids and young adults who don't have a role model like that," he says. "It feels great because I never had a role model like that."

"Conforming is not cool," he adds. "Embracing who you are and what makes you different is actually what's really cool ... The kids that are different and out there and expressive and are bold with those choices, those are the people that grow up to be people we all want to hang out with, that become celebrities or become really successful in what they do because they believe in who they are."

As for all the talk about his personal life, Lambert says just one word when asked if he'll address his sexuality directly, say in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone: "Maybe."

Did AT&T Crown American Idol's Winner?

posted by Katrina vanden Heuvel on 05/27/2009 @ 10:42pm

Okay, I know the stealing of American Idol 2009 isn't on par with the stealing of the 2000 election.

But for American Idol fan(atic)s, and I confess I am one, Wednesday's New York Times report that AT&T workers in Arkansas, Kris Allen's home state, "might have influenced the outcome of the this year's competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Allen" deserves to be investigated by a non-partisan commission with full subpoena power.

{ Details of the voting support provided by AT&T representatives were first reported last week in an article in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. )

There appear to have been no similar efforts to give free texting services to Lambert's supporters.

The call to investigate the Idol outcome is not about revenge, though I admit I was a huge fan of Adam Lambert. It's about ensuring fair elections and an end to voting irregularities.

As I write, Adam Lambert's supporters have flooded online chat boards with messages claiming irregularities in the voting. But the official American Idol website reads like a Soviet-era information site:no news of the emerging scandal anywhere to be found. Officials at Fox declined to talk about the situation. And AT&T reps are also mum. Was the outcome unfairly influenced by corporate sponsor AT&T eager to have Allen as this year's Idol? Did it consider Allen a better pitchman for its products? We deserve answers. Otherwise, Idol fans---tune out next season.

Re: [American_Idol_Extra] American Idol results may jave been rigged: AT&T power text scandal

Why is everyone so surprised Adam didn't win?   Should Adam have won ?  YES in all Caps. but I wasn't a bit surprised.  Should there be a recount ?  Probably, but do we really think it would make a difference?  Probably not..... Why?  We are still living in a country that refuses to grant equal rights to gays and lesbians, and supporters of Danny Gokey I am sure the vast majority of voted for Kris, ONLY because Adam doesn't fit the what society considers Normal.    What I don't understand, those that were so upset over his eye liner/and finger nails, would go and see a Kiss concert that is painted all over.... Well, what can I say... We still live in a homophobic society.  America , are we really letting Freedom Ring ?

Subject: [American_Idol_Extra] American Idol results may jave been rigged: AT&T power text scandal

Adam Lambert's phone lines were constantly busy, as if off the hook, and there were reports of text votes for Adam being switched over to Kris. Election fraud, anyone? -T

AT&T power text scandal: Will there be an 'American Idol' recount?

Winnerof_Steve_16805088_600Did AT&T influence the outcome of this season's "American Idol"?

And should there be a new vote?

The New York Times is reporting an "American Idol" hanging chad: One of the biggest corporate sponsors of "American Idol" might have influenced the outcome of the competition between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.

How? By providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting 'power text' votes at parties organized by Allen's fans.

AT&T is the only service that can be used to cast "American Idol" votes via text message. And they supplied free power text-messaging at two parties in Arkansas after the final episode of "American Idol" last week.

So far, no reports of similar parties and free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert.

Since then, angry Lambert supporters have flooded online sites with complaints.

In a statement issued Tuesday, a spokesman for AT&T said, "In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested."

AT&T helped Allen fans on sending 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button.

What do you think? Should there be another finale show and another vote?

Recount, anyone?

[American_Idol_Extra] Did AT&T Crown American Idol's Winner?

{ Details of the voting support provided by AT&T representatives were first reported last week in an article in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.)
