[American_Idol_Extra] SING ALONG SUNDAY: The Holly and the Ivy

SING ALONG SUNDAY: The Holly and the Ivy

"The Holly and the Ivy" is a traditional Christmas carol, which is among the most lightly Christianised carols of Yuletide[citation needed]. "Holly and ivy have been the mainstay of Christmas decoration for church use since at least the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when they are mentioned regularly in churchwardens' accounts" (Roud 2004). Holly and ivy also figure in the lyrics of the "Sans Day Carol".

Sir Henry Walford Davies wrote a popular choral arrangement that is often performed at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and by choirs around the world.

Origin

European Holly (Gaelic: cuileann) was sacred to druids who associated it with the winter solstice, and for Romans, holly was considered the plant of Saturn. European Holly has always traditionally had a strong association with Christmas. Henry VIII wrote a love song Green groweth the holly which alludes to holly and ivy resisting winter blasts and not changing their green hue So I am and ever hath been Unto my lady true.

Early English Lyrics by Chambers and Sidgwick, published in 1926, mentions a broadside of 1710 with a version of the carol which begins

The holly and the ivy
Now are both well grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown

An early book mentions the carol as well as a manuscript containing a more ancient song which is, or was, in the British Museum. The book was printed in 1823 and entitled Ancient Mysteries Described: Especially the English Miracle Plays founded on Aprocryphal New Testament Story extant among the unpublished manuscripts in the British Museum by the author, investigative journalist, devout Christian and former satirist, William Hone (1780-1842), and printed at 45 Ludgate Hill London. The book contains a list of carols (p 99) described as Christmas Carols now annually Printed including 70. The holly and the ivy, now are both well grown.

The book also describes (p 94) a British Museum manuscript: The same volume contains a song on the Holly and the Ivy which I mention because there is an old Carol on the same subject still printed. The MS begins with,

Nay, my nay, hyt shal not be I wys,
Let holy hafe the maystry, as the maner ys:
Holy stond in the hall, faire to behold,
Ivy stond without the dore, she ys ful sore acold,
Nay, my nay etc
Holy and hys mery men, they dawnseyn and they syng,
Ivy and hur maydyns, they wepen and they wryng.
Nay, my nay etc'

The music and most of the text was also collected later by Cecil Sharp (1859-1924) from a woman in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire which is also related to the older carol described as: "The Contest of the Ivy and the Holly", a contest between the traditional emblems of woman and man respectively.

Holly stands in the hall, fair to behold:
Ivy stands without the door, she is full sore a cold.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Holly and his merry men, they dance and they sing,
Ivy and her maidens, they weep and they wring.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Ivy hath chapped fingers, she caught them from the cold,
So might they all have, aye, that with ivy hold.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Holly hath berries red as any rose,
The forester, the hunter, keep them from the does.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Ivy hath berries black as any sloe;
There come the owl and eat him as she go.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Holly hath birds a fair full flock,
The nightingale, the popinjay, the gentle laverock.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.
Good ivy, what birds hast thou?
None but the owlet that cries how, how.
Nay, ivy, nay, it shall not be I wis;
Let holly have the mastery, as the manner is.

The Lyrics

The Holly and the Ivy

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown.
Refrain:
Oh, the rising of the sun and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a blossom as white as lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet saviour
Refrain
The holly bears a berry as red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to do poor sinners good.
Refrain
The holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn.
Refrain
The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all.

[American_Idol_Extra] At ‘American Idol,’ Old Rules for New Year

At 'American Idol,' Old Rules for New Year
Published: December 23, 2009

While the Academy Awards hope to attract a larger viewership by allowing more competitors for its top prize, "American Idol" is betting the opposite way. In advance of its ninth season, Fox said "American Idol," its popular singing competition, would return to its traditional format in which 24 semifinalists — 12 women and 12 men — are chosen in the Hollywood rounds to vie for the title. Last year "Idol" altered its rules to allow 36 contestants. Fox gave no reason for the return to the original format, though a smaller pool of semifinalists, and thus fewer rounds of competition, might give viewers less time to get tired of the contestants: the "Idol" finale in May was down more than three million viewers from its 2008 conclusion, the second-lowest-rated finale in the show's history. There is already plenty of change afoot on "Idol," which will return on Jan. 12 without its longtime judge Paula Abdul. She'll be replaced by rotating guest judges during regional auditions, including Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris; Ellen DeGeneres will join the judging panel when the show arrives in Hollywood in February.

The oldest member of heartthrob group the Jonas Brothers was married yesterday in a lavish wedding at Huntington's palatial Oheka Castle, People and E! Online reported.

With a snowstorm bearing down, Kevin Jonas, 22, and Danielle Deleasa, 23, tied the knot in a ceremony attended by 400 friends and relatives, People said on its Web site.

"The snow only made it look more like a winter wonderland," celebrity event planner Michael Russo told the magazine.

The couple, whom fans have nicknamed Kenielle, said, "We're so happy that we're finally married and we were able to share the special moment with family, friends and loved ones," People reported.

Deleasa, a former hairdresser from New Jersey, wore a strapless tulle and Chantilly lace Vera Wang gown, People said.

Brothers and band mates Joe and Nick served as best men, the magazines reported.

Guests included Demi Lovato, the band's co-star from the Disney Channel's 2008 movie "Camp Rock," the magazines said.

The couple met two years ago while on vacation in the Bahamas with their families, and Jonas proposed in July.

[American_Idol_Extra] SING ALONG SUNDAY: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

SING ALONG SUNDAY: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Today we have over two feet of fresh snow in New York with 6 foot drifts and it is still coming down.
"Have yourself a merry little Christmas, pop that champagne cork,
Next year we will all be living in New York."
A White Christmas for sure, no dreaming required.
Happy Holidaysto you and yours,
Peace and Love from Tommy.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is a Christmas song introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with modified lyrics, which has become more common than the original. The song was credited to Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, although during a December 21, 2006 NPR interview, Martin said that Blane had encouraged him to write the song but had not had anything more to do with writing it. In 2007, ASCAP ranked "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" the third most performed Christmas song written by ASCAP members of the past five years.[1]

The song was written while Martin was vacationing in a house his father Hugh Martin Cottage[2] designed for his mother as a honeymoon cottage in Birmingham Alabama. The house was located in the community of Southside across the street from Hugh's mother and right beside her aunt. The song first appeared in a scene in Meet Me in St. Louis, in which a family is distraught by the father's plans to move to New York City for a job promotion, leaving behind their beloved home in St. Louis, Missouri just before the long-anticipated Louisiana Purchase Exposition begins. In a scene set on Christmas Eve, Judy Garland's character, Esther, sings the song to cheer up her despondent five-year-old sister, Tootie, played by Margaret O'Brien.[3]

Hugh Martin

The sentimental setting of the tune in the finished scene owes much to the understated orchestration by Conrad Salinger and musical direction of Georgie Stoll.

However, when presented with the original draft, Garland, her co-star Tom Drake and director Vincente Minnelli criticized the song as depressing:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last,
Next year we may all be living in the past
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, pop that champagne cork,
Next year we will all be living in New York.

No good times like the olden days, happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who were dear to us, will be near to us no more.

But at least we all will be together, if the Fates allow,
From now on we'll have to muddle through somehow.
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.[4]

Though he initially resisted, songwriter Hugh Martin made several changes to make the song more upbeat. For example, the lines "It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past" became "Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight".[4] Garland's version of the song, which was also released as a single by Decca Records, became popular among United States troops serving in World War II; her performance at the Hollywood Canteen brought many soldiers to tears.[5]

In 1957, Frank Sinatra asked Martin to revise the line "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow". He told Martin, "The name of my album is A Jolly Christmas. Do you think you could jolly up that line for me?"[4] Martin's new line, "Hang a shining star upon the highest bough," has since become more widely recognized and sung than the original phrase. Martin made several other alterations, changing the song's focus to a celebration of present happiness, rather than anticipation of a better future.

Although the 1957 rewrite is the most familiar to listeners today, some artists, such as James Taylor, have issued more recent recordings with the original lyrics of the Judy Garland version.[4] Quiet Company recorded the song most recently for the 2007 release of Peace on Earth: A Holiday Album. The album was made available for download directly from the web. All proceeds from sales went to Toys for Tots charity.

In 2002, Newsong lead singer Michael O'Brien noted the line "through the years, we all will be together if the Lord allows," which was part of the original song, was purged and replaced with "if the fates allow" to remove religious reference when the song was released. He noted while a pastor in a California church in 1990, he had met Martin, who played piano at the church where O'Brien was serving for an evening, and the pastor was told, "That's the original way I wrote it, so I want you to sing it this way." [6]

In addition to NewSong, Twila Paris and Kathy Troccoli have recorded the song with original "depressing" lyrics.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – lyrics

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.
